A Taste of Nostalgia: The Ozindcare Snack Sale at "Madurikkum Ormakal -Season 10"

The air in Dural was filled with more than just the melodies on March 21st. As the community gathered at the Performing Arts Centre for the milestone 10th season of Madurikkum Ormakal, there was a secondary, equally enticing sensory experience drawing people in: the aroma of authentic, homemade snacks at the Ozindcare Snack Sale stall.

For those who have followed the Madurikkum Ormakal (Sweet Memories) journey, the event is a staple of Sydney’s cultural calendar. However, this year felt particularly special. As the audience arrived at 9-15 Quarry Road, they weren’t just greeted by the promise of soul-stirring music; they were met with a spread of traditional delicacies that offered a literal "taste" of home.

More Than Just a Snack

At Ozindcare, we believe that community spirit is best fostered over food. The snack sale has become a beloved tradition within our fundraising efforts, and Season 10 was no exception. Our dedicated volunteers spent time preparing a variety of traditional favourites, ensuring that every bite served was a reminder of the "sweet memories" the event aims to celebrate.

The Highlights of the Stall:

Homemade Authentic Flavours: The spread catered to every craving, spanning from the crunch of traditional murukku and spiced favourites like puffs, cutlets and parippu vadas to the nostalgic sweetness of Unniappams, payasam and rich, contemporary brownies.
A "Sell-Out" Success: Much like the performance inside the auditorium, our snack stall saw an incredible turnout. We are thrilled to report that many of our signature items sold out well before the final curtain call!
Community Connection: The stall acted as a hub for friends and families to catch up during the interval, sharing a treat while supporting a noble cause.

Where Your Support Goes

While the snacks were delicious, the true "flavour" of the day was the generosity of our supporters. Every dollar raised at the snack sale goes directly toward Ozindcare’s core missions:

Medical Assistance: Providing life-saving aid to those who cannot afford critical treatments.

Empowering the Next Generation: Highlights from the Ozindcare Youth Launch

The future of Ozindcare looked brighter than ever on 15th March 2026 as we officially gathered at Bungarrabee Park for the Ozindcare Youth Launch along with a barbecue lunch. With clear skies and a shared sense of purpose, it was a day defined by energy, inspiration, and the beginning of something truly special.

Here is a look back at the highlights from this milestone event.

A Growing Community

The turnout exceeded our expectations, as we were thrilled to welcome 40 enthusiastic youth participants. The diversity of talent and the high level of engagement from the start proved that there is a deep-seated desire among the younger generation to connect and give back.

Vision and Inspiration

The day opened with a warm welcome from Shosha Abraham etting a positive tone for the afternoon. Shosha had kindly volunteered to launch and lead youth wing for Ozindcare . We were then honored to hear from Prakash Palakkil (President, Ozindcare) , who shared the core mission of Ozindcare. He outlined the high-level expectations for our future youth team, emphasizing that this isn't just a group—it’s a platform for leadership and meaningful impact.

We were also joined by a special guest, Sam Gnanasekaran from CBA , who addressed the attendees. His perspectives on community involvement and professional growth provided valuable food for thought for everyone in attendance.

Building Bonds and Breaking Ice

Community starts with connection. The youth group involved in a series of high-energy ice-breaking games that moved everyone past the initial introductions and into genuine bonding.

Of course, no launch is complete without a great meal. Ozindcare Food committee masterfully led the BBQ and served a perfectly grilled lunch along with a delicious home-cooked desserts, the food was a highlight that brought everyone together.

Ideation: Shaping the Future

Post-lunch, the momentum shifted toward the future. During a targeted ideation session led by Shosha , the participants brainstormed impactful ways the youth branch can serve the community. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive; many expressed their gratitude to Ozindcare for providing a dedicated space where youth-led activities can thrive.

On a crisp May evening in Sydney, Ozindcare welcomed its supporters to a night unlike any other. Insomnia—not because you couldn’t sleep, but because you didn’t want to .

The sold-out show featured the remarkable Aathi , a master mentalist whose performance blurred the lines between reality and illusion. Insomnia wasn’t just a show; it was a theatrical journey into the human mind , a place where the impossible became possible, and where each moment held the audience in a state of awe.

From astonishing feats of mind-reading to moments that had the crowd gasping in disbelief, Aathi’s performance captivated hearts and minds. Every act was a window into the power of perception, psychology, and connection—a perfect metaphor for the work Ozindcare does daily to uplift and empower.

But Insomnia wasn’t just about wonder—it was about purpose . This special event marked a major milestone: Ozindcare’s 30th anniversary . For three decades, our charity has been dedicated to “Helping the Helpless”.

Biriyani Mela

A Biriyani mela was organised as part of the international women’s day on the 9th of March at Grevilla Hall. The event showcased a display of mouthwatering biriyani varieties prepared and packed by our very own selfless members for the public to buy and taste. The event was a great success and well received by the community. The funds generated was directed towards helping the helpless.

Snack sale

A snack sale was organised by Ozindcare at the “Mathurikkum Ormakkal “event on the 6th of April at Redgum centre. We were fortunate to have members volunteer their time and expertise to create various traditional snack delicacies. It was a sellout event.

Chill & Eat Food fest - A Heartwarming Success!

Ozindcare's popular annual food feat 'Chill & Eat Food Fest' was a resounding success! Thanks to your incredible support, we raised significant funds for charity while enjoying delicious, home-cooked meals. The live cooking at the venue was a hit, and pre-order pick-ups ran smoothly. Katha by Nachle - In association with Ozindcare

Katha - Chapters of Life, an extravagant dance showcase presented by Nachle Dance School, came to life on April 30th, 2023, at the Riverside Theatres in Parramatta. The event marked a significant milestone as Nachle celebrated its 10th anniversary of bringing Indian culture to the Illawarra and Campbelltown communities. In the spirit of giving back, all profits from the event were donated to projects supported by Ozindcare – Helping the Helpless.

The production featured four captivating stories, or "Kathas," portrayed through Indian cinematic, folk, and semi-classical dance performances. Nachle's talented dancers, ranging in age from 3 to 60, brought these stories to life with skilful movements, dazzling costumes, and enchanting music. With over 200 performers, the anniversary show was a remarkable display of the school's dedication to the art of dance.

The excitement of the day began early in the afternoon as proud parents and performers arrived at the venue in colorful and dazzling costumes and jewellery.

Throughout the show, Team Ozindcare supported the entire Nachle team and the performers, providing them with over 200 delicious snack packs and water to fuel their performances. Before the show and during intermission, Ozindcare also set up a food stall with a selection of homemade snacks, allowing parents and the audience to enjoy authentic Indian dishes alongside the show.

After the performance, pre-ordered meals of Pulao and chicken curry and the ever-popular Chicken Biriyani were available for attendees, and Ozindcare had also arranged additional food that could be purchased at the venue.

Overall, the Nachle team and all performers put on a fantastic show, and this was their second association with Ozindcare, the first being Itihaas back in 2019. Ozindcare and all its members are proud to support this amazing dance school, which generously donated all their profits to support those in need in India.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nachle for a memorable performance and for their commitment to giving back to the community.

Stories from Ozindcare - Support towards Physiotherapy expenses

Unni and Sangeetha are a hardworking couple from Peravur, Kannur, Kerala. They have two children, Appu aged 9 years and Malu aged 8 years.

Unfortunately, their lives took a challenging turn when both Appu and Malu were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth.

Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture, and it is the most common motor disability in childhood.

In addition to their diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Appu, who is in the autistic spectrum, is unable to attend a regular school despite several attempts. Malu, however, has better motor skills and is able to pursue her education at a normal school.

Due to the constant care and attention required for their children, Unni is unable to pursue his career, which has caused him significant mental distress. Sangeetha does her best to support the family, but they are unable to afford the cost of physiotherapy that Appu and Malu require thrice a week, which amounts to INR 12,000 per month (INR 500 per session per child).

At this point, the family contacted Ozindcare, requesting assistance, and with the support of our generous patrons, we have decided to provide ongoing support for the cost of physiotherapy treatment for the children.

We are happy to report that Malu has shown considerable improvement, but Appu still has a long way to go. Ozindcare remains committed to supporting Unni, Sangeetha, and their children as they navigate through this challenging period.

DONATE FOR A SMART PHONE CAMPAIGN

India has the maximum number of recorded cases of Covid infections, second only to US, in the World. The pandemic has had such an adverse effect on its people that what was once considered as ‘normal life’ all over India has been reduced to a distant memory.

As in most other countries, the global emergency due to the pandemic has resulted in a complete shift of teaching and learning processes. A number of schools in India have been shut due to the pandemic, and the classes have since then moved to Zoom and such other virtual platforms.

This transition from traditional schools to virtual learning has led to unforeseen problems. Particularly in rural India, several teachers and students lacked the basic infrastructure and the means to thrive in a virtual learning environment.

In view of this, in June 2021 Ozindcare initiated a ‘Donate for a Smart Phone’ Campaign for the benefit of the underprivileged children, who are unable to attend school as the classes have moved online.

As part of the campaign Ozindcare has since helped many such underprivileged students, in the following four schools in the states of Kerala and Karnataka in India, by providing them with smart phones / tablets for INR 2,62,000. This has helped them in continuing their studies in the current difficult times.

Distribution of kits to Daily-wage Migrant workers

India has a large population of Migrant daily wage workers, who work away from home and generally lead a hand-to-mouth existence. When India witnessed a brutal and incredibly challenging second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2021 which cost many more lives and jobs, Ozindcare recognised the plight and needs of the aforementioned segment of people who were quite intensely affected.

Due to lock down and with many areas being declared as containment zones, most of these migrant workers had lost their jobs. With only minimal local community support, they have had to go through many hardships during this difficult time.

The Leadership Team at Ozindcare decided to collaborate with a few social service workers in Bangalore, including some senior officers of the Army Welfare Housing Organization (AWHO) at Sandeep Vihar (Army housing colony, Whitefield) towards the distribution of dry ration kits.

Ozindcare was humbly able to provide food-kits to 250 of the most affected migrant families in Whitefield, Domlur Layout, Amarjyothi, Ring Road, and Bypanahalli, during May. Each kit contained grocery items worth about INR. 1000 that was sufficient to help feed a family of four for an entire month.

The year that was - past Ozindcare's 25th & the year beyond - into 2021

Ozindcare successfully completed ‘25 years of exceptional service’ and though we had plans last year to host a major event commemorating this milestone with all our members and supporters, cognizant of the fact that adhering to the public health and pandemic guidelines was much more important than anything else in the COVID-19 situation, we deemed it right to park that aside for the time being.

However, at the end of the year, during our last meeting in December with the Committee members who were present (unfortunately few members missed out as they were away), in a simplistic way - in remembrance of the remarkable achievement of everyone who has previously worked with Ozindcare/ remained a dedicated supporter to Ozindcare, we cut a cake holding at heart all of you lovely people in togetherness with us!

For a moment, if we were to pause and think about the tremendous challenges that we have had to face and fight last year, it clearly demonstrates the strength and resilience that each of you continued to uphold, in not only one’s own personal life but in your support and actions while being part of the Ozindcare community as well.

For any Charity, fundraising is an essential component without which the work we do would be placed at risk, but then COVID-19 restrictions brought in many challenges. Events and similar public gatherings which we previously banked on for raising funds, could not be conducted. Thus we have had to look at alternative options to bring in funds. The exceptional set of Ozindcare-ian’s who make an amazing array of tasty delicacies became a huge blessing in this scenario.

Many wonderful individuals and families came together and held their own food drives with their friends and acquaintances, proceeds of which was graciously donated to Ozindcare.
Families who were hosting gatherings or parties, couple of organizations for their key events etc., reached out to us and engaged Ozindcare for their food requirements.
We made sure that these engagements were met to the highest standard, in a professional manner and not surprisingly we have only received glowing feedback from our patrons thus far ��
Intermittently through the year donations from supporters amongst you have also come in. And for such grace and kindness, we are deeply thankful!

Most importantly, these efforts brought in the much-needed funds and kept us sustained and operational throughout 2020. In spite of being a relatively small organisation and with the pandemic setbacks, we probably are one of the select few charities who chose not to circulate any appeals citing COVID-19 to collect any funds from members and that standing in itself is a noteworthy achievement.

Our biggest accomplishment from last year:

We helped every deserving individual/cause that came to Ozindcare for help. All appeals were diligently actioned.
Every dollar of the funds disbursed has reached the person who needed that help. You have made a difference to many lives!

Your unwavering support has kept us driven and in high spirits. The work has doggedly continued towards the betterment of the needy despite all the adverse situations. We appreciate your faith in us, each and every action of ours will stay aligned to the Ozindcare core values into the year 2021 as well.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others

We hope all of you are keeping safe and well. And that your endeavour in terms of evaluating, repositioning, adapting, and holding up oneself to the challenges of current times, has stayed positive, confident, reasonably manageable and assuring for you and your dear ones.

The year 2020 has entirely changed the tone of the life we once knew and were so comfortable living in. Lockdown followed with safe distancing, working from home, wearing masks, hand sanitization, and restraints around celebrations, social gatherings, travel etc., have undoubtedly helped keep the pandemic at bay while also protecting the people from an irreversible health crisis. However, it has also affected societies and economies across all spectrums. The financial burden that most governments are facing due to the very high and ongoing cost of dealing with Covid-19 impacts is already a matter of grave concern and to add…the continual loss of jobs, struggling businesses, lack of employment are all impacting on family incomes and are gradually pushing many into poverty.

The appeals that we have seen coming in the recent past have mirrored the need of such vulnerable groups of people. We have with our limited resources been able to support those who have come to us seeking help and thus provide some relief as well. All these gestures, you made possible due to your kindness and support. With the restrictions in-place we cannot organise cultural programs or do massive food sales to generate funds as before and thus now we are solely dependent on well-wishers like you. Despite trying circumstances, you have stayed connected and helped in ways that you could. We take this opportunity to thank all those who have donated generously!

We hope each of you are keeping safe and are holding up through the lockdown period and the challenges that it has brought forth into our lives. We are now moving along the phased transitioning phase and so let us also hope, that we will slowly ease back into normalcy in the forthcoming months.

Not that long back, we were battling against the catastrophic bushfires and the devastation it caused to people, livestock, wildlife, and nature. And yet again, our morale and resilience is being put to test as we are now up against a Pandemic, working towards curbing the spread of COVID-19, a virus that has threatened our health, life, economic stability and mental well-being.

In these unprecedented times, we at Ozindcare remain committed to supporting those in need in any way we can. Bearing in mind the Public health directives, the Emergency Response Plan kick offs, the actions underway and the precautionary guidelines that we all ought to follow, the team at an individual level have been continuing to reach out and supporting people in their vicinity and reach in the best possible ways.

Being also mindful of the Australian Government driven timely and well-defined support mechanisms and the provisioning of financial assistance & support payments to aid individuals, households, businesses and most importantly the aged and the elderly, all of which in combination has thankfully provided that much required assurance to many.

Whilst that is the case, we are also cognizant of the fact that there may be a few others who aren’t covered under these efforts and so we are continuing to look at avenues to do our bit when it is required as well. To help and to reach out to the wider community space we have extended our support to the Sydney Malayalee Association and will work collaboratively to respond to people’s needs through these difficult times.

Apart from the domestic efforts, Ozindcare’s ongoing work to help the less privileged who have reached out requesting support, is continuing as always.

2020 - A new beginning - One of courage, resilience and hope!

Last few months, we have seen this beautiful country battling against disastrous and unprecedented weather conditions along with the heart-breaking losses of lives, land, livestock & wildlife. In spite of inconsolable human grief, we have seen our people remaining resilient in the face of adversity.

Communities across Australia continued to reel under the devastation struck by massive bushfires, sweltering under record temperatures and experiencing severe drought.

The scale of crisis that we are looking at, is massive. It is unlike anything we have ever seen before. We have lost many lives, numerous homes have been destroyed leading to mass evacuations and displaced families, millions of hectares of land are completely scorched.

The bush, forests and national parks are still burning away, countless animals have perished, many that are injured need adequate care to further survive. The gravity of impact on our wildlife habitat, the flora and fauna and the environment are those that needs to be addressed with utmost seriousness and effective measures and actions going forward.

As a socially conscious and responsible organisation, we at Ozindcare, at this time of crisis are supporting the local communities and this magnificent land through a few selected endeavours.

Our small contributions addressing both the community and the environmental conservation needs, have gone towards:

# Supporting our Volunteer firefighters (NSW Rural Fire Service)

One of world’s largest volunteer fire fighting organisation, the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is one that approximately 95% of NSW rely on, for fire and emergency services. The amazing work that RFS volunteers have been doing during our bushfires in constantly ensuring safety, support, and peace of mind to the community is indeed commendable.

So, there is no surprise that we have chosen to support this World class team who have been the frontrunners in this troubled Bushfire season in keeping our people and communities safe.

# Aiding the affected communities for Drought Relief (GIVIT)

In many regional areas of Australia, drought has been a recurring occurrence for the last few years. Rural communities have stayed resilient and managed to hold up through intense drought thus far. However, the situation unfortunately has only gotten worser this year.

Farmers - cattle - crops - older folk - families, the struggles they have had to face has been enormous. And our contribution to GIVIT is to do our bit in helping such affected communities.

# Providing food for few families who have been evacuated from their home (Vinnies)

Bushfire has displaced many Australian families, the stress they have all had to endure in evacuating to safer facilities, whilst also knowing that their homes were at risk or in few other cases have got completely destroyed, is very scary and unsettling.

As part of doing what we can for such families, we contributed to Vinnies so that food can be provided to 5 such families who have been evacuated from their homes.

# Emergency care and medicine for injured koalas affected by bushfires (WWF Australia)

Bushfires have taken the nests and homes of our birds and animals away; they have been exposed to the worst fires and many Koalas in the wild have got badly injured. WWF Australia had embarked on providing emergency care and medicine to these beautiful creatures.

With the devastation that Bushfires have caused, there is so much work we all ought to do in restoring forests and recreating wildlife habitat so that we can protect and pass on to future generations an environment that is safe, reliable, green, blessed and beautiful. A better world to live in, is an aspiration most of us carry for our children.

Towards this dream, we contributed to WWF Australia and that helped enable planting of 25 trees!

Natural disaster and recovery efforts

The pain from the devastating floods in Kerala from 2018 had not even healed when nature’s fury got unleashed to cause havoc again in 2019.

Many people lost their lives, death tolls went up even further, some got trapped under debris & were reported missing and millions have had to move to relief camps for shelter and safety.

Agricultural lands were lost, crops got destroyed, wildlife habitat placed at risk and it also caused massive damages to public utilities and critical infrastructure.

In Wayanad, one of the worst hit districts in North Kerala, heavy rains and massive landslides had wiped away entire areas of land and hundreds of homes! Thus, many families lost both their land and livelihood.

It is during this extreme situation in Kerala that we got to know about Sreeja, a widow & a sole low wage income earner from Panamaram in Wayanad who has two daughters and an elderly mother to care for. She was desperately looking to get some help to make a shelter for her family of four in her 8 cents of land.

And it is with your generous support, that we at Ozindcare were able to build a house and provide shelter and safety to Sreeja and her family. This was actioned as part of the ‘Flood recovery initiative’ from last year and it was successfully completed as planned in 2019.

For the sense of relief and safety they now experience, they are extremely grateful to each of you!

The key to the home was handed over to an incredibly happy family.
